Renting Moving Totes vs. Buying Plastic Bins

June 29, 2026 · 5 min read

Once you decide against cardboard, the next question is whether to rent totes for the move or just buy a stack of plastic bins and keep them. Both are reasonable. Which one is right usually comes down to a single question: do you actually want to own them afterward?

The case for buying

  • You have real, ongoing storage needs — garage, attic, holiday decorations, seasonal gear.
  • You move often enough that you would use them again within a year or two.
  • You want containers for months, not weeks, while you renovate or stage a home.
  • You only need a small number and have somewhere out of the way to keep them.

The case for renting

  • You need a lot of them at once. Buying 60 bins is a serious purchase. Renting 60 for two weeks is not.
  • You don't want to store them. Empty bins take up nearly as much room as full ones. Sixty of them will eat a garage bay.
  • They come to you. No trips to load bins into your car in batches, and no disposal problem at the far end — we pick them up.
  • The extras are included. A dolly, labels, and a marker come with the rental rather than being four more things to buy.

The part people underestimate

Storage after the move decides this more often than price does. Bins that felt like a smart purchase in week one become a stack in the corner of the garage by month three. If you can honestly name where 40 empty bins will live and what you'll put in them, buying is a good decision. If you can't, you're buying a storage problem along with the containers.

A quick way to decide

You can do both

Plenty of people rent totes for the bulk of the move and own a handful of bins for the things that live in storage year-round. That combination costs less than buying enough bins for an entire house, and it leaves you with only the containers you will genuinely use.
