A move feels overwhelming when it's one giant to-do list. Break it into weeks and it becomes totally manageable. Here's a simple timeline to keep you on track from four weeks out through your first days in the new place.

4 weeks out: set the foundation

• Confirm your moving date and, if you're hiring movers, book them now.
• Reserve your moving totes for your packing window so they arrive when you want to start.
• Start decluttering — donate, sell, or toss what you won't bring.
• Create a folder (paper or digital) for receipts, contracts, and important documents.

3 weeks out: start packing the rarely-used stuff

• Pack off-season clothes, decor, books, and anything you won't need before the move.
• Label each tote by the room it's going to — not by what's inside.
• Submit your change of address with USPS and update key accounts.

2 weeks out: handle the logistics

• Schedule utility transfers (electric, water, internet) for both homes.
• Keep packing room by room, leaving out only daily essentials.
• Arrange time off work and childcare or pet care for moving day.

1 week out: the final push

• Pack almost everything except a few days of clothes and toiletries.
• Make an “open first” tote: chargers, basic tools, toilet paper, snacks, medications, and a change of clothes.

Moving day

• Stack sealed totes on the dolly and load by room so unloading is fast.
• Do a final walk-through — closets, cabinets, the attic, behind doors.
• Keep your essentials tote and important documents with you, not on the truck.

After the move

• Unpack room by room, starting with the kitchen and bedrooms.
• Break down nothing and haul nothing — just stack the empty totes for pickup.
• Update your address on your license, insurance, and any remaining accounts.
