How to Pack Fragile Items for Moving (Dishes, Glass & Art)
May 16, 2026 · 6 min read
Nothing sours a move faster than opening a tote to find a cracked plate or a shattered frame. The good news: a little technique prevents almost all of it. Here's how to pack your fragile items so they survive the trip.
Start with the right materials
- Packing paper (or unprinted newsprint) for wrapping — newspaper ink can rub off.
- Bubble wrap for the most delicate pieces.
- Towels, blankets, and clothing double as free padding.
- Sturdy totes that won't crush under weight — this matters more than people think.
Dishes and bowls
Cushion the bottom of the tote with crumpled paper. Wrap each plate individually and stand them on edge, like records — they resist pressure far better vertically than stacked flat. Nest bowls with paper between each one.
Glasses and stemware
- Wrap each glass on its own and stuff paper inside for support.
- Keep them upright; never lay glassware on its side.
- Fill gaps with paper so nothing shifts in transit.
Mirrors, frames, and artwork
Tape a large X across the glass so it holds together if it cracks. Wrap the piece in bubble wrap or a blanket, then stand it upright on its edge — never lay it flat, where weight can snap it. Pad the corners well; that's where damage happens.
Electronics
Snap a photo of the cable connections before unplugging so reassembly is painless. Wrap each device, bundle its cords with it, and cushion it on all sides. Original boxes are ideal if you still have them.
The golden rules
- No empty space. Fill every gap so items can't move.
- Heaviest on the bottom, lightest and most fragile on top.
- Don't overfill. A lid that won't close means too much weight.
- Label clearly so fragile totes get carried — and stacked — carefully.
Pack on a sturdy foundation
Half of protecting fragile items is the container itself. Rigid totes that stack without crushing — unlike sagging cardboard — keep the weight off whatever's underneath. Reserve your totes and we'll deliver them to your door. For the trickiest room of all, see our kitchen packing guide.
