Apartment Moving Checklist: A Smooth Move In or Out

Apartment moves have a few extra hoops that house moves don't — notice periods, deposit rules, elevators, and tight parking. Miss one and it costs you time or money. Here's a clean checklist for moving out of (or into) an apartment.

2–4 weeks before

• Give written notice to your landlord — check your lease for how many days are required.
• Ask exactly what you need to do to get your deposit back (cleaning, patching nail holes, carpet).
• Reserve the elevator and a loading zone with your building, on both ends if possible.
• Reserve your moving totes for your packing window.

1–2 weeks before

• Transfer or set up utilities and internet for your move date.
• Submit your change of address with USPS.
• Pack room by room, labeling each tote by where it's going.
• Confirm parking — narrow apartment lots fill up fast on weekends.

Moving day

• Protect shared hallways and elevators (many buildings require it).
• Stack sealed totes on a dolly — far easier than juggling boxes through doorways.
• Do a final walk-through: closets, cabinets, balcony, storage unit, mailbox.
• Take photos of the empty unit for your deposit records.
